What is periodontology?
Periodontology is a branch of dental medicine that focuses on the health of the supporting structures of the teeth. The periodontal ligament connects the tooth root to the bone, giving the tooth a stable and secure position in the jawbone.
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of soft and hard dental plaque. The gums are the mucous membranes covering the teeth and jawbone; they appear red, swollen and may bleed during inflammation. As the disease progresses, the inflammation can affect the bone and periodontal ligament, leading to gum recession, bone resorption, and, if untreated, tooth mobility
The advanced stage of inflammation of the tooth-support apparatus is called periodontitis.
HOW TO TREAT?
GINGIVITIS
Proper oral hygiene and regular professional removal of hard dental deposits (scaling) can bring gum inflammation under control.
PARODONTITIS
Early stage
When the loss of supportive tissues is not significant, conservative treatment methods are available. Deep cleaning of hard deposits below the gum line, followed by scraping and polishing of the tooth roots. This approach cannot restore the level of bone and periodontal ligament to its initial state but can halt the progression of the disease.
To keep the disease under control, check-ups every six months, professional dental cleaning, and proper oral hygiene are essential.
Late stage
When the disease has progressed to the point where bone defects are substantial, we must opt for a surgical approach.
The approaches vary depending on the situation, and periodontal surgery allows us to halt the progression of the disease; we can replace the lost bone and part of the gum. We approach each patient individually, and our team of experts, along with a periodontal specialist, develops a therapy plan that will be best for the patient.
AESTHETIC PERIODONTOLOGY
GUMMY SMILE
Gum tissue often represents an aesthetic problem. When instead of the white aesthetics of teeth in the smile zone, the red zone of the gums prevails, the harmony of the smile is disrupted, and patients recognize this issue as a gummy smile.
A gummy smile or overly visible gum tissue is a problem that can be addressed in several ways depending on the situation
If a minor correction is needed, it can be performed using a laser or electrocautery to minimally invasively remove excess gum tissue.
If the teeth are relatively small and the gum tissue is very pronounced, we will opt for clinical crown lengthening. There is a surgical and a non-surgical method; if surgery is required, it will be performed by a periodontology specialist under local anesthesia.
