Dental Veneers – Why Are More Patients Choosing Them?

Aesthetic dentistry is playing an increasingly important role in the lives of both patients and dental professionals. Many people hesitate to smile due to dissatisfaction with their teeth, which can significantly affect self-confidence .Thanks to dental veneers, it is now possible to achieve a complete aesthetic smile transformation in a fast and painless way.

Dental veneers gained their popularity in Hollywood thanks to numerous celebrities. Due to constant exposure to spotlights, the public, and the media, they are expected to look flawless at all times. For this reason, many celebrities have chosen dental veneers to enhance the appearance of their teeth and create a more beautiful smile.

Dental veneers represent a modern solution in aesthetic dentistry, with one of their key advantages being a natural-looking smile. In addition to aesthetics, it is essential to provide patients with a healthy and functional solution, which is also our mission.

WHAT ARE DENTAL VENEERS?

Dental veneers are prosthetic restorations that are applied to the front surface of natural teeth. They are commonly used to cover minor aesthetic imperfections, delivering significant results and a long-lasting smile transformation.

Veneers are usually placed in the smile zone and can be applied to one or multiple teeth.

Veneers represent a minimally invasive aesthetic solution that preserves the natural tooth surface or requires only minimal treatment. In aesthetic dentistry, there are two types of dental veneers: composite veneers and ceramic veneers.

For ceramic veneers, the natural tooth surface is minimally prepared (approximately 0.3–0.5 mm), while no tooth preparation is required for composite veneers.

ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL VENEERS

Dental veneers offer numerous advantages. Due to different lifestyles and habits, natural teeth can become worn over time and lose their whiteness. The first solution that usually comes to mind for restoring tooth colour is teeth whitening, but thanks to dental veneers, this does not have to be the only option. PWith dental veneers, it is possible to change the colour, shape, and size of teeth. In addition to correcting aesthetic imperfections, dental veneers can also be used to improve minor orthodontic irregularities.

Although many celebrities wear gaps between their teeth—known as diastemas—as a personal trademark, this is not always desirable, as it can be a concern for patients seeking a perfect smile. With dental veneers, this issue can be effectively resolved.

When compared to orthodontic treatment, dental veneers offer a faster solution with equally effective aesthetic results.

Thanks to their material properties, dental veneers have a high level of transparency, allowing them to reflect natural tooth enamel and closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth. In addition, the materials used are biocompatible, meaning there is no risk of gum irritation or allergic reactions.

Composite or Ceramic Veneers – What’s the Difference?

Dental trauma occurs when teeth are exposed to a force that may be mild or severe, potentially causing fractures of hard dental tissues and/or the structures that anchor the tooth in the bone. The force causing trauma can be direct (for example, a fall from a bicycle where the tooth directly hits the ground) or indirect (such as a blow to the lower jaw, causing the lower teeth to strike the upper teeth).

Every dental injury requires immediate intervention, as any delay significantly reduces the chances of successfully saving the tooth.

The population most prone to traumatic dental injuries is children. They are constantly physically active, making falls a part of their everyday life. Front teeth are most commonly affected—especially if they are protruded—while back teeth are injured far less frequently.

Sometimes injuries may appear alarming due to damage to the surrounding soft tissues, such as the lips, the area around the mouth, and the gums. Bleeding can be significant; however, if you rinse the injured area with plain water, you will often see that the injury is not as severe as it initially appears.

Types of Dental Injuries

Dental injuries are divided into injuries to hard dental tissues and injuries to the supporting structures of the teeth. They can be distinguished by whether the tooth is mobile or not, and whether it remains in the same position as before the trauma. If the tooth is displaced, this indicates damage to the supporting structures that secure the tooth in the bone.

Injuries to hard dental tissues are recognizable by fractured or chipped parts of the tooth. These injuries can be minor or severe. Severe injuries are identified when a small spot of blood is visible on the remaining part of the tooth, indicating exposed pulp (the tooth nerve). Minor injuries involve only a small chip of enamel and dentin without pulp exposure.

When comparing composite and ceramic veneers, composite veneers are somewhat less durable and more prone to colour changes. Composite veneers can be used to correct the shape and size of teeth and are an ideal solution for closing gaps between teeth, without the need for tooth preparation.

They are also highly suitable for polishing, which helps maintain their appearance and contributes to their longevity—further enhanced by modern aesthetic dentistry techniques.

On the other hand, ceramic veneers are more resistant to wear, offering long-term durability, and they do not absorb pigments from food and beverages. This also explains the slightly higher cost of ceramic veneers. To place ceramic veneers, minimal tooth preparation is required in order to create space for proper placement.

In addition, ceramic veneers do not require polishing, as the ceramic material maintains its stability and appearance from the very first day.

Who Is a Candidate for Dental Veneers?

One of the most common questions we hear is: “Am I a candidate for dental veneers?”

Finding the right answer is not always simple. To determine whether you are truly a suitable candidate for dental veneers, a thorough oral health assessment is required. Ideal candidates are patients with healthy natural teeth, free of active decay and without large composite fillings on the teeth intended for veneer placement.

For any treatment or procedure to be successful, an individualised approach is essential. Each patient is treated on a case-by-case basis, starting with a comprehensive clinical and radiological examination. This is followed by taking precise dental impressions and capturing a series of photographs of the smile and dental arches, which serve as the foundation for accurate treatment planning.

With digital smile design, a computer-based smile simulation, we carefully combine the colour, size, and shape of dental veneers to achieve the best possible match for each patient. Throughout this process, we listen to your wishes and preferences, as strong communication between the dentist and patient is essential for achieving optimal results and complete satisfaction. Before the final placement, the shape and shade of the veneers are reviewed and approved by the patient.

After veneer placement, no recovery period is required. Initially, the teeth may show mild sensitivity to hot or cold, but this is temporary and short-lived. As the entire veneer procedure is a painless smile makeover, patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately.

The longevity of dental veneers is closely linked to proper oral hygiene. To ensure veneers last as long as possible, correct daily care is essential. This includes thorough tooth brushing twice a day, regular use of dental floss, and gentle gum massage with a soft toothbrush. It is also recommended to avoid habits such as chewing ice, biting nails, or using teeth to open objects, as these can damage veneers.

With consistent oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, veneers can last 10 years or longer.

For patients who suffer from bruxism (involuntary teeth grinding during sleep), wearing a protective night guard is essential to prevent damage to the veneers.
